1. The candidate enters the examination room and approaches the adjudicator’s table, after a curtsy or bow the candidate will hand their exam card to the examiner and say “Good Morning, Madam” (or examiners name).
2. The candidate will be expected to stand smartly, effecting a good carriage of the body and head.
3. Following the examination, the examiner indicates that the candidate may leave; the candidate curtsies or bows says “Thank You”, takes a few steps backwards before turning and walking out.
The manner in which the candidate enters and leaves the room, the general presentation, grooming and conduct during the Examination is all an important part of their dance training.
The purpose of the Introductory Examination is to assist young candidates in the Examination process, preparing them for their approach to theoretical discussion. The first Grade is to remove any initial fear wherever it may exist.
The candidate will not receive marks at this stage, but will be given a “Pass” or “Unready” card with short comments to assist the pupil towards the next grade, or if an “Unready” candidate, to improve the work before re-taking the examination.
It is of great importance that pupils do not attempt tricks without the supervision of a teacher. Only when the teacher gives permission can tricks be practiced alone.
Ambitious children could have accidents, which is why only qualified teachers can properly guide each individual child depending on ability, strength of spine and flexibility of legs. Every body differs and to copy another pupil with varying physique could be very dangerous.
The Modern Art Group is a group of selected graduates of the Association. There is a Junior, Intermediate and Senior section. Invitation to the group is an indication that the dancer is somewhat in advance of the "ordinary" and shows potential in technique, personally or showmanship. The only way by which the dancer may join this group is by invitation from an Examiner, during an examination of the Modern or Tap syllabus. Membership provides a free entrance to a special lesson held each year at Members Day, also eligibility to apply for a place in the AAD Gala by audition. A pupil who is a member of the Modern Art Group, may use the letters MMAG after their name, provided subscription payments are up to date.
